As most of you know, Dean Schaumburg was in a logging accident on August 16th. He was life-flighted to OHSU in Critical Care.
Initial injuries included: broken right ankle, multiple spine fractures with severe L5 trauma, multiple broken ribs, and some bruising of internal organs. He was put on a ventilator to help him breathe and given pain and sedation drugs. When briefly brought out of sedation he was able to follow some commands such as moving his arms and left leg. On the 17th a complication was discovered when he was unresponsive, despite the lessening of the sedation drugs.
With testing it was found he had suffered strokes to his brain stem and other areas of his brain. He underwent emergency surgery to relieve the swelling in the brain, including cutting away part of his skull to provide room for the swollen brain tissue. Follow-up scans have indicated stabilization of brain injuries, though there may be some day to day fluctuating in brain swelling. The opening in his skull still remains.
In subsequent days he underwent surgery to repair his ankle and fuse his spine.
Thankfully, these surgeries were completed successfully. His ribs are being left to heal on their own and there are no reports of permanent damage to internal organs.
